Mercury Free Thermometers
To prevent separation thermometers must be stored in an upright position at all times. Do not use thermometers at maximum temperature limits, as this will cause separation in the column. To avoid separation, limit use of the thermometer to temperatures thirty degrees or more below maximum. If separation occurs, the column can be rejoined by cooling (use refrigeration mixture of ice, salt, and water or dry ice in alcohol) until the entire column recedes into the bulb. Tap gently to remove bubbles and keep in an upright position as the column rises. If you break a mercury-free thermometer wipe up the spill, place towels in the trash, and place the broken thermometer into a broken glass container. |
