FIRE/LIFE SAFETY TRAINING OUTLINE

Safety is the primary concern in the residence halls and to have a good overall safety program, a dedicated effort is needed from all parties involved. It is essential that each resident receive training in fire prevention and know the proper procedures should a fire occur. This training outline corresponds with the Fire/Life Safety Regulations and Policies and the self-inspection form.

I. FIRE PREVENTION
A
SMALL APPLIANCE >Halogen lamps are not permitted.
>Space heaters are prohibited.
>Hair dryers are not clothes dryers.
>Be sure other appliances such as clothes irons, electric rollers, curling irons are turned OFF before leaving the room.
>Refer to Section III-J for Appliance Policy.

HOUSEKEEPING >Empty trash/do not place waste cans in the corridor.

SMOKING >Use proper size ash trays.
>Do not dispose of cigarette butts in waste baskets.
>DO NOT smoke in bed.

DECORATIONS >ALL decorations must be U.L. listed flame retardant.
>Encourage students not to over decorate their room.
>Refer to Section III-L for Decoration Policy.

LIGHTING >DO NOT obstruct lighting units, especially emergency lighting units and exit signs.

CANDLES >NOT permitted
G
ELECTRICAL >DO NOT overload.
>Refer to Section III-H for Electrical Policy

STAIRWELL DOORS >Are a required means of egress. DO NOT block open.
I
COOKING >NOT PERMITTED in rooms.
>Refer to Section III-J for Cooking Policy

II. EMERGENCY PREPARATIONS

EVACUATION PROCEDURES >Emphasize evacuation plan for the building.
>Discuss information on the posted plan.

HANDICAP STUDENTS >Request volunteer assistance.
>Relocate to stairwells.
>Report location to firemen/University of Kentucky Police.
C
FIRE ALARM ACTIVATION >Pull stations - know locations
>Smoke detectors - never smoke beneath a detector.
>Sprinkler systems - Activates fire alarm.
>Annunicator panels - Indicates location of alarm.
D
EMERGENCY NUMBER >911 - When dialed contacts U.K. Police Officer.
>Use for Emergencies only.
E
FALSE ALARMS >Report anyone abusing the fire alarm to the Hall Director.

III. FIRE SUPPRESSION EQUIPMENT

A
Fire Extinguishers >All Residence Halls have “ABC-All Purpose”
type fire extinguishers that can be used on any type fire. (See attached training sheet for
proper operation).
B
Report all vandalism of units or discharged units to the University Fire Marshal (257-6326).

IV. GENERAL SAFETY

A
Report Unsafe Conditions to the office of Occupational Safety and Health (257-3827).

Bicycles - Not permitted in buildings - Refer to Section III-K for information
C
Report all injuries to the office of Occupational Safety and Health see attached Injury Report Form (Form 6).
