FIRE CODE REGULATIONS

The purpose of this section is to provide a guideline on required fire safety regulations applicable to day to day activities. The Kentucky Building Code (KBC) and the Kentucky Fire Prevention Code (FPC) should be consulted for detailed requirements.

  1. Each residential building must have a safety training class early in the fall semester. (Refer to attached training outline.) Upon request, the University Fire Marshal’s office can assist in this training.
  2. Fire drills must be conducted per University of Kentucky policy. (Refer to III-A for additional information).
  3. Stairwell fire doors and corridor doors must be maintained in an operable condition and must be self-closing and self-latching.
  4. Emergency lighting and exit signs must be maintained in an operative condition.
  5. Fire alarm systems must NOT be deactivated for any reason. Should the need arise to disconnect the system for a particular occurrence, approval must be obtained from the University Fire Marshal (257-6326).
  6. Means of egress (stairwells, corridors, passageways) must be maintained free of obstructions.
  7. All decorations must comply with the decoration policy. (Refer to Section III, Paragraph “L”)
  8. Flammable liquids are NOT permitted in the building (gasoline, paint thinner, charcoal lighter fluid, propane gas, etc.).
  9. Candles are NOT permitted.
  10. Cooking is only permitted in kitchens. (Refer to Section III, Paragraph “J”)
  11. Interior Finish
    1. Carpet is not permitted on walls.
    2. Non-permanently attached combustible materials that create a fire hazard must be removed or treated with a fire retardant chemical. Certification of treated materials must be provided to the University Fire Marshal.
  12. Emergency training instructions must be provided to all occupants of the residence hall. This training must include the location of exits, proper response to a fire alarm, how to use a fire extinguisher, how to activate the fire alarm system, and list emergency numbers. Refer to the attached Training Outline for additional information. Upon request, the University Fire Marshal will assist with this training.
  13. Fire safety information must be posted in each student room. The posting must include a floor diagram showing the actual floor arrangement, exit locations, room identification and any necessary emergency evacuation information. (For an example of a posting that may be used, refer to the attached “Emergency Plans - Preparing for the Unexpected”.)
