FIRE/LIFE SAFETY TRAINING OUTLINE


Fire safety is of primary concern and to have a good overall Safety Program, a strong effort is needed from all parties involved. It is essential that each resident receives training in fire prevention and knows the proper emergency procedures should a fire occur. To accomplish this, each Chapter house is required to conduct a training class early in the fall semester. The following items need to receive special attention. Upon request, the University Fire Marshal will assist in the required training. Call 257-6326 for information.

I. FIRE PREVENTION
A. SMOKING Use proper sized ashtrays, DO NOT dispose of cigarette butts in waste baskets - many times the cigarette is not completely extinguished.
B. COOKING ONLY permitted in kitchens.
C. DECORATIONS Combustible/flammable decorations are NOT permitted.
D. SMALL APPLIANCES Appliances such as hair dryers are safe as long as they are used properly. They are not designed to dry clothing and can cause fires. Be sure other small appliances, such as curling irons, electric rollers, irons, are turned OFF when leaving room.
E. ELECTRICAL Do NOT overload circuits. Do not cut off the ground prong of a plug. Halogen lamps are not permitted.
F. CANDLES NOT permitted.
G. STAIRWELL/FIRE DOORS CANNOT be blocked or "propped" open. Doors are there to provide you with a safe means of exit from the building.
H. CORRIDOR Trash cans or any item that would obstruct egress from the building ARE NOT permitted in the corridor(s).
I. STORAGE NOT permitted in mechanical rooms.

II. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

    B. FIRE ALARM

    1. Each resident should know what the FIRE ALARM PULL STATIONS are and where they are located.
    2. EMERGENCY NUMBER -- 911 Use for any type of emergency. When dialed, the UK Police Dispatcher will answer the call.
    3. SMOKE/HEAT DETECTORS Automatically activates the fire alarm system.
    4. FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT Know where this equipment is located and know the proper use of fire extinguishers (the UK Fire Marshal can provide training).
    5. FALSE ALARMS KILL Use alarm system in proper manner.

III. GENERAL SAFETY

    A. Report unsafe conditions to the office of Occupational Health and Safety, 257-3827.

    B. An accident report form is to be completed for accidents to staff, students and visitors. Refer to Form 6.
