Managing Waste Batteries
In the past it was permissible to throw small batteries into the regular trash. Due to new regulations governing “Universal Waste”, the University must now collect and recycle ALL batteries other than automotive and emergency generator “car batteries” (which have their own recycling program in place). Disposal of Spent Batteries: Do not put batteries in the regular trash. All spent batteries generated at UK should be sent to Environmental Management (EM) via campus mail. Use campus mailer envelopes for most small batteries; a small box or large envelope may be needed in some cases.
Spent batteries can also be delivered to the EQMC office during normal working hours. Departments/buildings should set up a central collection point for automotive and other large batteries . Units can set up a regular pickup time with EM or call as needed. Handling Spent Batteries: Batteries should not be placed into metal containers. Leaking or damaged batteries must be managed as hazardous waste and not sent through the mail. Contact the EM department for information on managing leaking or damaged batteries. |
