Anyone who ships dangerous materials must comply with federal and, in some cases, international, regulations. UK personnel need to be aware of these rules and follow them. Dangerous materials include the following hazard classes:
Any faculty, staff, or student associated with the University of Kentucky who is involved in shipping hazardous materials is subject to these rules. While many of our laboratories are likely to be impacted, other units may be impacted and must be sensitive to common items that may meet the hazardous materials definition. For example, paint may be covered as a flammable liquid and aerosol spray cans as a compressed gas. UK requires all personnel who are involved in any aspect of shipping hazardous materials (e.g., packing, labeling, transporting, etc.) to attend DOT/IATA training. This training is to be updated every two years. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulates the shipment of dangerous materials within the United States. The regulations (1) require proper classification, packaging, labeling, and documentation of all shipments, (2) require training for anyone who prepares or offers materials for shipment, and (3) set penalties and fines for noncompliance. International shipments must follow the Dangerous Goods Regulations of the International Air Transport Association. The Environmental Management Office has a copy of these regulations. DOT/IATA training: This training is provided by Environmental Management. Classes are held monthly in the EQMC Building. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required. Call Peggy Quisenberry at 323-6280 or email at pquisenb@email.uky.edu to register. Performance packaging: We offer performance packaging, DOT stickers, and assistance in shipping dangerous goods.
