  • On-Site and Initial Radiation Safety

In order to comply with federal and state regulations, all individuals at UK proposing to work with radioactive material must receive "on-site training" and "initial training" before starting as a radiation worker. This training is provided in two parts.

The first part is On-Site Radiation Safety; this training is provided by the Authorized User or unit supervisor at the individual's place of work. A signed On-Site Radiation Safety Training Form must be provided to the individual as evidence of receiving this part of the training. After completing the first part, contact the Radiation Safety Office for the second part.

The second part is Initial Radiation Safety; this training is provided by the Radiation Safety Office and will take about fifteen minutes. (See training outline) The individual must bring a copy of the signed On-Site Radiation Safety Training Form and a completed, signed Radiation Worker Registration Form to the second part. No one will be admitted without both of these forms.

Note: Completion of On-Site and Initial Radiation Safety enables an individual to begin as a radiation worker; however, within four months of taking Initial Radiation Safety, the Basic Radiation Safety course must be completed. The Basic course is a three-hour lecture and demonstration style course that covers radioactive materials, radiation characteristics, and radiation safety in detail.

If you have any questions about this class, contact Erica Ray at (859) 323-6276, or emray1@uky.edu.
