Items considered to be major deficiencies that
may result in closure of house or a particular room
 


 
  • Stairwell doors are not self-closing and self-latching.
  • Exit stairwell or corridors are obstructed or being used for storage.
  • Room doors are not self-closing and self-latching.
  • Lofts are used with open storage under them including combustibles, refrigerators, couches, etc.
  • Extension cords are found in the room.
  • Windows cannot be easily opened due to obstructions or being sealed in the closed position.
  • Electrical multi-plug adapters are found in the room.
  • Room has an excessive amount of furniture that increases the fuel load, and/or hinders egress.
  • Wall paneling on the wall(s) (existing or new) is not fire rated.
  • Room has been remodeled (including new lofts, new walls, closets, bars, benches, or platforms, etc.) without approval by the University Fire Marshal.
  • Space heaters are found in the room.
  • Candles are found in the room.
  • Smoke detectors have fallen or been pulled away from ceiling (hanging by its wires) or otherwise damaged.
  • Electrical light fixtures, plugs, and/or switches are found hanging out of the wall/ceiling and not properly supported.
  • Electrical work performed by someone other than a licensed electrical contractor and not inspected.
  • Flammables (gasoline, charcoal fluid, paint thinner, etc.) are being stored in the building.
  • Fire extinguishers are discharged, not operative, vandalized, or missing.
  • Kitchen range hood/filters/ducts are full of grease build-up and need to be cleaned.
  • Mechanical room used for storage.
  • Gas powered equipment (lawn mowers, motorcycles, etc.) stored in building.
  • Fireplace does not have a grate for the logs to rest upon to prevent them from rolling out of the firebox.
  • Fireplace does not have a spark screen to prevent hot embers and coals from popping out of the firebox.
  • Fire drills have not been held as required.
