Minors In Research Laboratories or Animal Facilities

Environmental Health and Safety is committed to helping young researchers understand the risks involved with working in research laboratories or animal facilities and how those risks can be minimized. The Minors in Research Laboratories or Animal Facilities Policy was developed to document the risk assessment decision logic for each proposed project. The risk assessment also provides researchers information on controls and training that are required when certain hazards are present.

  • Please read the Minors in Research Laboratories or Animal Facilities Program Policy.
  • Complete the Minors in Research Project Registration form.
  • Submit the completed Minors in Research Project Registration form online here.
  • Minors working in research laboratories or animal facilities must complete EH&S training modules online prior to beginning laboratory work. All UK EH&S training modules are available online here. A UK Linkblue ID account is required to complete UK EH&S online training modules.
    • To request a UK Linkblue ID account, an email from an authorized requester should be sent to 218help@uky.edu. The email should include the following information:
      • Full legal name (including middle)
      • Correct Date of Birth
      • Note any other previous names or UKID number that the person may have used in connection with UK
      • Access being requested
      • Domain that the Link Blue ID needs to be on
      • If non-employee, non-student of UK – the length of time the linkblue is needed and a brief (1-2 sentence max) explanation of the reason why the account is needed
      • Contact ITS Customer Services at 859-218-HELP (4357) or 218help@uky.edu for assistance
  • Minors working in research laboratories or animal facilities must be provided Laboratory Specific Training by the PI/Sponsor prior to beginning laboratory work. A checklist is available online here. A copy of Laboratory Specific Training must be maintained in your laboratory safety manual.

The Minors in Research Project Registration form will be reviewed by UK EH&S. Once review is complete and all training requirements have been met, an approval memo will be sent to the PI/Sponsor. UK EH&S will not review incomplete submissions. If you have any questions about this process or laboratory safety at UK, please contact Delena (Dee) Mazzetti, Assistant Biological Safety Officer.
